Innovative slurry inoculant recognised for its contribution to sustainable farming and soil health.
SlurryForSoil™, an innovative slurry inoculant developed by Sylgen Animal Health, has been awarded a prestigious Judges’ Special Mention in the UK Dairy Day New Product Competition 2023, sponsored by IDEXX.
The accolade was accompanied by high praise from the judging panel, Lilia Kazemi-Egbunike and Danuta Radzio, who commended SlurryForSoil™ for its potential to challenge the long-standing reliance on artificial fertilisers as well as its commitment to enhancing soil microbiota. They said:
“Based on detailed scientific research, SlurryForSoil™ encourages farmers to reduce synthetic fertiliser use and boost micro organisms in slurry. It is a simple and cost-effective solution that enables farmers to benefit from natural processes. The overall impact improves grass yield and quality whilst enhancing plant protection and it is the new era of soil management. Farmers can receive an education pack with information that is comprehensive yet easy to follow. The product is sustainable and will help lower carbon footprint.”
Geoff Hooper, Director of Sylgen Animal Health, expressed his delight at being shortlisted, emphasising SlurryForSoil™’s potential impact on the agricultural industry. “As it pushes the boundaries of what a slurry inoculant is, and does, we certainly think it’s innovative. And with farmers increasingly under pressure to lower their environmental impact, while margins are being squeezed, it’s potentially very influential too.”
SlurryForSoil™ stands out as a unique slurry inoculant, comprising a complex blend of 18 different plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria and fungi, meticulously designed to enhance soil and plant health. Beyond its ease of use and cost-efficiency, the product has proven itself in various trials.
One such trial conducted by Duchy College compared treated and untreated slurry, demonstrating the tangible benefits of SlurryForSoil™. Nutrient analysis revealed significant improvements in the retention of key nutrients such as ammonium nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulphur, magnesium, copper, zinc, and calcium. Moreover, dry matter yields increased by an impressive 24.3%, with quality indicators showing remarkable improvements—NDF dropped by over 10%, Oil-A rose by more than 23%, and sugar increased by nearly 30%. These findings mirrored those experienced by farmers who have adopted the product, underlining its consistency and reliability.
SlurryForSoil™ plays a vital role in reducing production costs for dairy producers by minimising the reliance on synthetic fertilisers while simultaneously increasing grass productivity. The result is a reduced carbon footprint, aligning with the growing demand for environmentally responsible agricultural practices.
In an era where sustainable farming practices and soil health are paramount, SlurryForSoil™ has emerged as a game-changer. Its recognition with a Judges’ Special Mention at the UK Dairy Day New Product Competition serves as a testament to its potential, demonstrating that innovation and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.
